Cause for Drinks – event THIS WED

Holiday Matinee is celebrating 10 years of creativity and they want you to join! The Cause for Drinks event is happening THIS Wed in SD at the rooftop bar at the W hotel, downtown. If the 10 year anniversary isn’t enough cause for drinks, you will be pleased to know that they have teamed up with Friends of TOMS shoes and will be giving 25% back to the charity. *Good Stuff*

OH and there is still time to enter the 10 for 10 contest! They are giving away 10 prizes from TOMS Shoes, W Hotel, Pat & Oscar’s, Furni Creations, Feelgoodz, No Star Clothing, T-Post, Field Notes, EA Sports and a pair of tickets to Def Leppard & Poison. To get these prizes, all you have to do is take a photo/video of yourself doing something creative that you have never done before and email it to HM. CAKE. I think I’m going to try gymnastics. Who wants to video it?!

There will be tons of creative minds at the event, and of course, great drink specials. We will see you there…

Comic-Con San Diego 2009

comic-con09-googleSo, if you don’t know by now… Comic Con is a big deal. Even google got the memo. Comic Con is a 4 day event held at the San Diego Convention Center. It was originally created to feature comic books, and science fiction film and television, but has now expanded to pop culture artists, anime, manga, video games and all things sci-fi. You can find guest appearances by celebrities, artists and pop-culture icons and of course LOTS and LOTS of costumes! The convention is the largest of its kind in the world, filling to capacity the San Diego Convention Center with over 125,000 attendees in 2007. Everyone is tweeting and posting pics from the event AS WE SPEAK. Here are some good ones from the past 2 days:

Starbucks drops logo and goes local

starbucks-logoAs I sit here and eat my free Starbucks pastry, I am reading about the next big change for Starbucks. Turns out that people actually miss the integrity of their local coffee shops with art and music and sincere help. According to The Seattle Times, Starbucks is dropping their corporate logo and re-branding the shops to fit their environment. They are testing this out in Seattle and are preparing to open “15th Street Coffee and Tea.” All of the bags and mugs will be branded as 15th Street and they will serve wine and beer, host live music and poetry readings and sell espresso from a manual machine rather than the automated type found in most Starbucks stores. Not sure they will be able to hide the corporate beast behind a friendly logo, but we shall see. Read more about the switch here.

I must tell you that my experience at Starbucks today was very random. Everyone was wearing some sort of animal mask on their head, the lady behind the counter asked me “if my adventure was complete,” and a Starbucks employee yelled at a woman for setting her coffee on the window sill. It reminded me why I love my local Cafe Calabria so much!

PRIDE in SD this weekend

It’s time to show your PRIDE in San Diego! This year has been a rough year politically for the LGBT community, and I know many San Diegans have taken the time to organize events and peaceful protests, but this is a time to party! I know it’s hard in the shadow of prop 8, but let’s celebrate how far we have come. The theme this year is “Stonewall 2.0- Activism for Equality” and it’s a 3 day event full of music, food, drinks and of course, the parade. The event kicks off tonight with hundreds of parties and drink deals all over Hillcrest. The Parade is on Saturday at 11am and goes down University and then turns on Sixth street. See the map.

The San Diego Pride Celebration is the 5th largest in the United States attracting 160,000 spectators to the Parade and 50,000 to the weekend Festival. The Pride Parade is the best attended and largest single day event in San Diego. The two-day Pride Festival features multiple stages of entertainment, musicians, bands, comedy and dance performers, 300 participating vendor booths, an Art exhibit, a Green With Pride Zone, Farmers Market, cultural presentations, great food and much more!
The event is for EVERYONE gay and straight alike. It’s about peace and love and being yourself. :) Come out and celebrate. For more info on tickets and event details go to SanDiegoPride.org.

acl3

WHY WE HUB THEM: We hub music. ACL is famous for headlining some major mainstream musicians as well as some up-and-coming bands you SHOULD know. Not only are they creating a whole weekend of fun in the sun, they also do it the green way. The festival is 100% carbon neutral and they are doing their part by banning styrofoam, plastic bags and more. You can also help off-set your carbon footprint by picking up a Be Green Fan Tag for $3. Learn more here.

HOW WE CAN HELP: Musicians and Artists go together like peanut butter and jelly. Artistic Hub would love to team up with Austin City Limits to run a t-shirt design contest for the festival coming this October. Why not let artists from around the world create and submit their t-shirt designs for the event? The public would vote for their favorites on the ACL website and the one with the most votes would be the official t-shirt of the event. Plus, all of the designs in voting are available on-demand, so anyone could go online a purchase a design on a hoodie, t-shirt, tank top and more. This would be a fun way to get artists involved in the event and to get some really killer t-shirts that everyone would rock for years to come!

High Trek Adventure San Diego

img_0736

Last weekend Mel and I teamed up to participate in San Diego’s first ever High Trek Adventure. We designed High Trek’s new storefront and decided a team building exercise with the Artistic Hub/Collar Free crew would be a perfect Saturday afternoon. Split into teams of two, Jimmy and Pat and Mel and I hit the streets of San Diego. Dressed to kill with our matching Collarfree Obama tees, headbands and matching socks we were ready to dominate anyone that got in our way. Mel and I recommend High Trek Adventure to everyone! We had a blast exploring the city in a new way. There were about 180 participants ranging from teams of two to groups of families, and there was even a baby!

High Trek Adventure is a unique urban race where brain meets brawn. Teams solve clever clues and face fun challenges all while navigating the urban landscape via foot or public transportation. That means: no cabs, bikes or skates. You have to bring your digital camera and take pics in front of each checkpoint. Mel and I prefer to jump. Jason Hofsess, High Trek’s head honcho was super nice and excited to have everyone there. The next adventure is April 11th in Austin.
