Collecting the Mail: Handmade books

I stumbled onto this great blog where the bookbinder saved all of her junk mail envelopes to use as pages of very unique journals. What an obvious and super fun idea for a book. She started with stacks (signatures) of cut open junk mail envelopes.

And ended up with these beauties:

All of the journals have envelopes for pages with the security patterns, plastic windows and stamps left in tact. I can’t wait to make my own. Thanks Rhonda from Canada :) Rhonda’s has great ideas for all kinds of books. Check out more of her work and blog here.

Let Yourself be Wrong

Lovin’ this print from the Raw Art Letter Press Etsy Store. I might just have to pick myself up one of these typographic beauties!

Good Morning! The holiday season can be exciting but also overwhelming. Remember in design and in life – keep it simple :)

My Other Half is Traveling

So my other half, my blog partner and co-worker: Michelle, has taken an undisclosed time off from the “real world” to travel with the love of her life. They will be heading to lots of exciting places and meeting lots of exciting people. She may pop up here once in a while if she is inspired to blog, but I know she will be focusing on the experience.

Michelle: I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate everything you do. You pick up where I leave off and you always know how to make me smile. We work all day together in the office and then we go out drinking at night. You work with me and you STILL want to be my friend. Even when I get stressed, you always know how to pick up the pieces. You and Zank are a huge part of my life and I’m so thankful to have you always inspiring me and just making me laugh. You are missed, but I’ll see you soon. LIVE IT UP.

Can’t wait to see all of the photos! See you in spring ~

Featured Artist: Mike Stilkey

Mike Stilkey. His work is such a treat. I find the book arts is a bit of a lost art. He embraces materials that may be overlooked to use, such as book covers and vintage book pages. From installations to paintings his work has the ability to absorb the viewer. His images tell stories and his work is full of beautiful mixed media texture with an undertone of whimsical melancholy, longing, and despair. His work isĀ  flooded with depth and mystery that entices the viewer to get to know his ambiguous characters and wonder about their lives in their unusual settings.
